So apparently, I’m from that old generation — you know, the one that actually had the balls to walk onto a stage, sweat a little, and present live material to an audience that came to listen and watch what a performer of pop or jazz had to give. Wild concept, I know. Unfortunately, if I were to go back on stage today, I’d basically be working for cellphones. And I have absolutely nothing in common with a cellphone. Nothing. I don’t know how to communicate with one, and frankly, it doesn’t seem interested in me either. So yes — I’ve retired from public performances. Not because I can’t play. But because I really don’t like competing with a glowing rectangle for your attention. But then… as everybody — me not excluded — has to go with the times… we’ll be working with AI to conjure up some interesting videos. Based on traditional, professional, actual human music-making. Because if you can’t beat the algorithm, you might as well get it to carry your gear.
